Why am I running?

3 1/2 years ago I walked into my first County commission meeting. I was not sure what to expect. I've been going ever since, because I believe we have a real problem in Washington County. There is no accountability for public officials in the County. "We the people" are supposed to hold them accountable, but we have not. I feel the County needs term limits for the public officials. Property taxes can be reduced; there is plenty of fat in the budget. We need to reduce the size of the County commission. A way to hold the officials accountable is to have television or live Internet streaming of the County commission meetings. After watching for three years, I do believe it would be nice to have a posted agenda for the County commission meeting.

This is an uphill battle. My job is to get people to vote. Yes, we would like to have our government back, but if we don't start voting for people that will give it back, all may be lost. It does not take many votes locally to make a difference. Four years ago, only 7000 citizens voted in the May election. I know the budget. I have feared talking about the budget openly, because the other candidates do not know the budget, as well as I do. Soon we'll have all three candidates in the same room, and we will see who really cares about the soul of Washington County.
